On 9 September 2025, Airtel Africa’s arm Nxtra by Airtel announced the start of construction work on the new data centre in Kenya as part of accelerated digital transformation strategy which is driving strong demand for data centre capacity across Africa. As a technology company, we’re positioning ourselves to meet this demand: billed as the largest infrastructure of its kind in East Africa, the future facility will be in Tatu City, near Nairobi, and with a capacity of 44 MW, it is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.
This is the second hyperscale facility announced by Nxtra by Airtel. The first hyperscale data centre of 38 MW is in construction in Eko Atlantic City (Lagos, Nigeria): this is part of the ambitious programme to build a vast network of data centres across the continent, with high-capacity infrastructure located in the major cities within its footprint.
Through this network, Nxtra by Airtel aims to meet the growing demand for integrated and secure solutions, both for multinationals and large African companies, startups, SMEs and governments.
“Once completed, the data centre will be a partner of choice for hosting cloud workloads and artificial intelligence, to boost businesses, support governments and open new opportunities for communities in the region.”
